Microscopy Core

The Microscopy Core was launched in 2023 to provide training, consultation, and advanced support for optical microscopy and image analysis. Expertise and assistance are available for all steps from study design to preparation of figures and manuscripts. Instrument training and user support for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) is also available.

Widefield Microscopy:

  • Nikon Eclipse Ti2-E motorized inverted microscope with white light LED illumination (brightfield and fluorescence)
  • Nikon Eclipse Ti2-E motorized inverted microscope with multiline LED illumination (brightfield and fluorescence)
  • Zeiss Axioscope manual upright microscope (brightfield and fluorescence)

Confocal Microscopy:

  • Nikon AX R point scanning confocal
  • Zeiss LSM 800 point scanning confocal
  • Crest X-Light V3 spinning disk confocal

Specialty Microscopy:

  • Asylum MFP-3D-BIO atomic force microscope (AFM)
  • Hitachi S-4800 scanning electron microscope (SEM)

Image Processing and Analysis Workstations:

  • NIS-Elements workstation A (standalone batch deconvolution, GA3, AI, EDF)
  • NIS-Elements workstation B (integrated deconvolution, tracking, GA3, AI, EDF)
  • ZEN workstation PC (Airyscan processing, BioApps)
  • AFM analysis workstation PC

Complimentary user support services:

  • Instrument training
  • Troubleshooting and technical assistance

Services with hourly rates:

  • Image acquisition performed by core staff (available for light microscopes and the scanning electron microscope)
  • Development of automated image acquisition routines (NIS-Elements JOBS)
  • Staff assistance during use of microscopes or workstations

Looking for consultation on study design, image analysis, or preparing grants and manuscripts? Additional support is available collaboratively outside the scope of these core services. Please contact Tatyana directly to discuss your needs and goals.

Acknowledgements and Authorship

In all instances where core resources were used to acquire, process, or analyze data related to presentations and publications, the authors should acknowledge the Microscopy Core. For publications and posters, at minimum, the following statement (or similar) should be included:
“The authors acknowledge the Microscopy Core at Nationwide Children’s Hospital for providing microscopy resources and support.”
Additional details, including specific experiments, processes, or staff names, may be included as appropriate.

In instances of substantial intellectual contributions by core personnel (e.g. major role in study design/optimization, leading the development of image analysis methods and data processing, major manuscript contributions, etc.), these contributions should be reflected with authorship. In these cases, the statement of acknowledgment for the core should also be included.
